Red and Black

Giclee print, 2020

47 x 31 cm

This image by photographer Chris Ward was produced for Litehouse Gallery’s exhibition “Home: Through the Artists’ Eyes” in 2020.  About it, he writes: “It was one of a series of portraits of familiar and commonplace subjects in my home. The striking red and black is at first unfamiliar. The abstraction of the framing, point of view and colour lending it a strong graphic quality. Then the textures reveal themselves, followed by the variations in the lie of fur revealing the form of a cat asleep on a red cushion covering her eyes with one forepaw.”

Photographer Chris Ward is a Londoner. Self-taught from an early age, his images have been published in Financial Times Weekend, Time Out and Evening Standard. He has done commercial work in fashion and music, including the MOBO Awards. In his photography, Ward identifies the drama in the mundane, where magical moments are fleeting and often unnoticed. Finding and seeing these “accidental still lives”, turning the play of light or interaction of textures into intriguing chiaroscuro and abstractions.
