Born in Syria in 1980, Hamsho graduated in Licence Journalism from Damascus University, Syria in 2004. He is a founding member of the charity Alphabet for Alternative Education, working to provide educational and psychological support to children in Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon. He lives in Paris, France.  Though created in a specific country and era, Assem Hamsho’s black and white prints evoke the timeless and frozen aspect of life in any camp, anyplace or anytime, where people have nothing to do but wait. Hamso created his series Places of Zero Time in Syrian refugee camps in Lebanon. “Here we meet the women who are the pillars of this enclosed society, and the children whose childhood is wasted waiting. Schools may arouse their motivation, but they need only look around at the tents made of old advertising banners for luxury products to be reminded of the economic, social and philosophical gap between themselves and the outside world.”
